Original Wildlife, Bird, Landscape Painting "Cormorants, Drying Their Wings on the Madison River" by Western Landscape Painter Nancee Jean Busse

Cormorants are fascinating; almost prehistoric in their appearance. I discovered this pair while driving with my husband along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. Original Available. Prints Available.

Original Colorado Landscape Painting With Eagle "Uncompahgre Gold" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

When my painting studio faced south toward the Gunnison River I was able to watch waterfowl fly the canyon every day. Geese, ducks, herons, eagles, and sandhill cranes flew over that waterway and I enjoyed watching them every day. The eagles were always impressive!

Original Wildlife Bird Hawk Art Painting "Rain Dance" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Last summer, after a heavy rainstorm, this lovely hawk landed by our window to dry off after the deluge. It strutted and flapped its wings, while we took photo after photo. What a marvelous display!

Original Red Rocks Landscape Painting "Red Rocks,Blue Heron" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

The canyons in Lake Powell are full of wonder and mystery. My husband and I were floating back from Davis Gulch and this blue heron followed our course for a while, perching on rocks and observing as we drifted by. Beautiful day; beautiful memory.

Raven, Bird Fine Art Painting, Wildlife Art "THE SENTINEL" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

I love painting ravens. They are such impressive creatures, and iconic of the American West. To those who ascribe spiritual importance to animals, Raven is a wonderful spirit guide, full of mischief and courage and hutzpah. I used a reference photo that I took about 15 years ago from a hike in Grand Teton National Park to paint this one.

Original Canada Geese Wildlife Painting "Gliding Home" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

This wildlife painting is of Canada geese behind my old studio.  During the winter season, the field behind my fine art studio was full of Canada geese, eating and resting in the sun. Around sunset, they would lift off in small groups and fly down to the Gunnison River for the night. I will never get tired of watching birds! I have had two clients request oversized, gallery wrapped gicleés of this painting (40×60). They are fabulous!

I was privileged to attend a horse roundup near Kalispell, Montana in June. The horses were beautiful, the landscape was beautiful, the day was beautiful, the whole experience was beautiful! What a fabulous experience!

Western Wildlife, Landscape , Fine Art Print, "Elk Calf Study" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

This is a small study painted prior to a larger piece. I photographed this elk calf up in Yellowstone on the Madison River. This calf and 4 others were sunning themselves on a small island in the river, while only one cow grazed on the opposite bank. A few miles up the road, Grady and I saw a large herd of cows. I theorized that one cow stayed back to watch over the sleeping calves while the rest of the herd moved to a meadow with better grazing opportunity.

Most of my paintings are literal. While I love honoring the beauty of nature, my Ada series is where I can paint an inner landscape.

Original Whimsical Female Figurative Painting "Yellow Lady and Raven" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

Sometimes I paint to satisfy my need to render detailed, decorative elements. I love painting on Yupo because it is completely unforgiving: every brushstroke and mistake shows. I love it because the entire process is apparent. Instead of the viewer seeing merely the end result of many days of work, they can see the whole thing, from underpainting to final strokes.
